Environmental Sustainability
Our Projects
SRES is constantly planning and enacting new ways of improving the ecological health, biodiversity, and sustainability of our area. Below you can find some of our current projects, along with the project intent and most recent progress reports.

Seed Bombs

The latest in manicured lawn counter-insurgency, the seed bomb is a simple construction of soil, native plant seeds, and dried leaves to provide organic material to help the 'bomb' break apart as the seeds germinate.
Native plants are important to the preservation and restoration of our local natural areas for wildlife habitats. We create our bombs to be aesthetically pleasing when in bloom and to benefit the Northern Illinois fauna. Our seeds are collected from local sources so the genotypes stay local.

Bird Houses and Feeders

SRES is working to construct bat houses, duck houses and bird houses that will be sold as a fundraising opportunity.
We use materials gathered from locally salvaged and upcycled sources to reduce the amount of waste our community contributes to landfills. By reusing materials we save the energy and water that would be used to make new boards when there are perfectly good ones available.
For more information please contact President, Devin Saunders or Advisor, Joey Holmes.

Stream Monitoring

SRES is committed to protecting our lakes and streams. Our current water quality monitoring system is the EXO 2 Sonde from YSI, sponsored by Freedom Field Renewable Energy, which is installed into Spring Creek on RVC's campus.
Data from this unit will be analyzed by club members and used to suggest enhancements to create a cleaner water system for our community. Ground and surface water feeds our drinking water supplies, making sure these sources are clean provides all living creatures with safe and healthy drinking water. The data will also be used in science curricula at RVC.
